Language matters.
Words can be powerful, especially when you consider the source. Many times over I have seen what a few seemingly innocent phrases can do to a person’s outlook and outcome when they’re searching for health answers.
Depending on the person, words like these can create feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy. They can lead to catastrophizing and worst of all, fear of movement.
Regardless of whether any of these terms actually apply, I always speak in the positive. After I take their initial history, I don’t focus on pain but rather on my client’s function. I’ll ask “how are you feeling?” rather than “how is your pain?” I don’t neglect pain but don’t let it be the focus of our treatment plan.
I firmly believe that the language we use should motivate and uplift our clients, and not contribute to their fears.
