NMES.
๐๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ซ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐๐๐๐) is helpful after surgery, particularly for the quadriceps after knee surgery (but depending on the procedure, you may not be allowed to contract your quad initially).โ
The very first post-op goal should be to achieve a ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ญ, which in turn helps with stability, particularly with standing and walking (or else you get that ๐๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ญ-๐ค๐ง๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ข๐ญ). The sooner we regain quad activation, the sooner we regain strength and function.โ
Donโt skip this basic requirement. Too many times I have met clients who started rehab elsewhere, where the quad set has been overlooked and they have been given exercises that are too difficult. โ
NMES is very comfortable. Contracting along with it gives the best results and I find that clients progress very quickly after just a few sessions. This may be the only old school modality that I stand by. Some of the newer devices can be used for warm up and recovery as well. But ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐๐/๐๐ ๐ - you know how I feel about those!
