Commonly used phrases in rehab that need to retire.

 

Context matters and many of these ideas are used too broadly or simply aren’t true or necessary.

  • Flatten your back and draw your belly button to your spine

  • Don’t let your knees go past your toes 

  • This will strengthen your VMO

  • Squats and deadlifts are bad for you if you have a back issue

  • Running is bad for your knees 

  • Always keep your back straight

  • Always bring your shoulder blades down and back

  • You have low back pain so you should do lots of prone extensions

  • Your muscle is tight so you need to do lots of stretching

Often these are blanket statements and ignores the individual’s needs and function. A number of these are outdated and research has shown to not be true.
