Spinal surgery and rehab.
I recently treated a client who had a lumbar laminectomy 5 years ago and noted discomfort with day to day tasks. Like many who have had spinal surgery, he didn’t seek post-op rehab.⠀
⠀
This is something in my career that I’ve pushed to change, as many clients are told by their surgeons to simply rest and walk for their recovery. ⠀
⠀
Clients are often quite disappointed in their resulting function, having developed a fear of movement from the lack of education and rehabilitation. With this comes a variety of side effects. The end result is a significant loss in spinal motion and decreased quality of life.⠀
⠀
Post-Surgical Physiotherapy is incredibly important for regaining function and optimizing healing - but should be done with an experienced clinician. Someone who understands the surgical procedure and communicates with the surgeon, knows the intricate phases of healing and appropriate progressions in motions and exercises. I have extensive experience in this domain and is one of my favourites to treat.
